Where to get help, and how to keep this in proportion

If you need help now

This is a national number. It is the National Problem Gambling Helpline, run by the National Council on Problem Gambling through a network of contact centers covering all 50 states and the US territories. Free, confidential, 24 hours a day, every day. Call or text 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738), or chat at ncpgambling.org.

1-800-GAMBLER, run by the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey, also answers 24 hours a day.

One thing worth knowing before you call. Calls to the national helpline are routed by the area code of the phone you are calling from, not by where you actually are. If you have moved state and kept your number, or you are traveling, say where you are and ask to be transferred.

If you are in crisis, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. It is separate from the gambling helplines and is the right number if you are thinking about harming yourself.

Some honest words about what this site is

A research tool can make betting feel more rigorous than it is. The numbers on this site are real and carefully made, and they still will not make you a winner. We looked hard for an edge in tens of thousands of archived closing prices and did not find one. The house margin is real, it is charged on every bet, and over enough bets it is what decides the outcome.

So: bet money you can afford to lose and would not miss. Decide the amount before you start, not while you are behind. Chasing a loss is how a bad night becomes a bad year. If betting has stopped being entertainment, it is time to stop, and the number at the top of this page is answered by someone who will not judge you.

Signs worth taking seriously

Betting more, or more often, to feel the same way
Betting money meant for something else
Chasing losses
Hiding it, or lying about it
Restless or irritable when you try to cut down
Borrowing to bet, or to cover a bet
It is costing you sleep, work or a relationship

Any of these is worth a phone call. All of them together is worth one today.

Tools your sportsbook already has

Licensed US sportsbooks offer tools such as deposit limits, time limits, cool-off periods and self-exclusion in their account settings, and many states run self-exclusion programs. The state directory above can point you to the program where you live.

We do not take bets, so we have no deposits to limit. What we can do is be straight about what the numbers can and cannot tell you.
